Seasonal Creating

It all begins with an idea. A feeling really.

When fall arrives I’m a little hesitant to leave summer behind but then the weather begins to cool, leaves begin to fall, the garden looks less green and pumpkins patches start advertising. And… I really could go on and on cause there really is so much to fall. But the one thing that gets me is a new season of making. As each new season begins I always catch myself thinking I should’ve started making for this season months ago. But no matter. I’m not sure if I’d have enough time or brain power to back everything up and think of falls things during summer anyways. The things of each season are what inspire the ideas. Like wet woodsy walks remind me of knitting fingerless mittens and cowls. And trips to the pumpkin patch bring images of knit pumpkins and leaves. And exploring river banks in summer remind me of stone doodling and weaving baskets from tall grasses. Cold winter nights inspire small Christmas ornaments and handmade gifting goodies.

So right now is the perfect time for knit pumpkins. Not sure what I’ll do with all of them. Maybe pack them away for next years farmers’ market booth or post some on social media for sale. Most probable they’ll be gifted.

One of my most fun ideas came to mind while sitting in church this past weekend. I was knitting a hat and when I knit on Sabbath I like to work on things I can gift to people. People specifically in need. So with all those avenues coming to merge in my mind the idea is of fitting a hat design to an individual. Finding someone homeless or just down on their luck… maybe even just someone who’s sad or feeling alone — which could really be anyone — but I’m more specifically thinking of individuals that really wouldn’t or couldn’t invest in a hat at this point in their lives but could most defiantly use the warmth of body or soul. Anyways in my round about way of explaining I think it would be quite enjoyable to gift individually designed hats to brighten peoples days. I’d ask them what colors they like and maybe even design and do some measurements for just the right fit. And wouldn’t it be fun if need be also a shampoo and hair cut?! I could work with the homeless ministry team on that one. I just love this idea. But one last thing I’ve left out. If roles were reversed I’d want to give to receive so… a hat for a story I think would be fair.

In so many words I’d definitely be the one blessed the most. What are your thoughts? Have you done something similar in your area? I’d love to hear your experience. Not sure if this idea with play out just as I’ve imagined but I do always get enjoyment out of sharing my hand knits with others. Something about gifting something I find so overwhelmingly wonderful with someone who may never experience the practice of knitting or crocheting. It’s the little piece of it all I can share.
